UST Upgrades and Removals

The Kialegee Tribal Town tank removal at Wetumka, OK

February 1998, ITEC submitted a multi-tribal grant application to the Adminstration for Native Americans (ANA) to fund underground storage tank monitoring equipment, removals and upgrades. ITEC asked for approximately $177,000 to complete this project. The tribes that participated in this grant opportunity were provided with the capacity to monitor their own tanks with portable monitoring equipment. This equipment also has the capability to monitor for other contaminants and will complement any environmental office. ITEC provided training on the proper use of this monitoring equipment and training for UST operators on what needs to be done on a monthly basis to stay in compliance.

The ITEC UST program leveraged EPA funding to upgrade tribal USTs and $23,000 from the BIA to remove USTs on Chilocco School lands. These UST upgrades have brought almost every tribe in the state into compliance with the EPA's 1993 and 1998 federal standards.
