ITEC Tribal Mobile Particulate Monitoring

Cherokee Nation’s Environmental Programs will develop and implement a tribal mobile particulate monitoring station capable of evaluating particle pollution on tribal lands. This mobile station will be fully equipped with continuous PM2.5 and PM10 instruments along with meteorological equipment. The station will provide near-real-time hourly averages of particulate matter for tribal communities. The unit will be capable of wireless data transfers to the ITEC offices for data validation and posting of data to the U.S. EPA AQS database & AirNow websites. Hourly particulate measurement information will be available to the public in near-real-time. The station will be deployed on a 90-120 day basis and will rotate to various tribes and pueblos within EPA Region 6.

The initial proposed tribal monitoring sites include the Osage Nation, Taos Pueblo, Mescalero Apache, Zuni Tribe, Laguna Pueblo, and the Cherokee Nation Marble City community. This project will be underway by mid year 2006.

The station will consist of a 10 X 12 enclosed trailer equipped with R&P PM2.5 and PM10 continuous TEOMs. The mobile monitoring station will also utilize a portable MetOne meteorological tower and an ESC 8832 datalogger. The station will be set up at the various tribal sites for a 90 day interval; tribes need only provide phone and electrical service. PM and met data will be uploaded to Cherokee Nation daily via satellite uplink; the data collected will not be used for regulatory purposes, but can be used by tribes to determine if further sampling is warranted.
